O'HARE
AIRPORT
The enhancement of the façade at O’Hare Airport – whose iconic United Terminal was designed by Francisco’s former partner Helmut Jahn – created a stronger interior connection between the departure level and the arrival level through the introduction of new circulation systems. At the same time, it created a strong connection to arriving cars via an elegant canopy tapering to a fine point. The project accomplished these goals while utilizing advanced building materials and environmental systems technology. The project also presented unique challenges because the work had to take place on an active site that remained in use throughout construction. This required developing modular systems that could be easily and quickly constructed as well as a

skillful phasing strategy that would minimize the disruption to airport operations. IMAGES BY RAINER VIERTLBOECK
